Tazio Nuvolari (1892-1953)

Tazio Nuvolari became the legend during his life. He was born on 18th November 1892 in Casteldrio near Mantova. His uncle Giuseppe was working in the Bianchi racing team. He let him in the world of motor racing. When he was 28, he had started his racing carrer as a motorcycle driver in the Bianchi team, in which he achieved the Italy Champion title in 1925. In 1924 he also started his car racing career. In 1927 Nuvolari established his own racing team with his friend Antonio Varzi from the Bianchi team and bought two Bugatti 35B. The folowing year Varzi became Alfa Romeo's driver and Nuvolari joined hom in 1929. In 1930 Nuvolari won the most prestigious Italian race Mille Miglia, passing Varzi only 3 kilometres before the finish line.

In 1932 he joined the Scuderia Ferrari. Despite several victories in 1933, as a result of conflict with Enzo Ferrari, he abandoned Scuderia and joined the Maserati team. After disastrious season 1934 he decided to return to Ferrari and in 1935 he got his greatest victory, beating "Silver Arrows" at Nurburgring in a presence of Adolf Hitler. At the beginning of 1936 he had a dangerous crash during practice before the Tripoli Grand Prix lightly wounded he managed to start and gained seventh place in that race. He proved his miraclous skills again beating Germans at Hungaroring

(Video film 9.7MB Mov format) The Second World War destroyed practically career of the great Italian driver, who attempted to returned to racing in 1945. He was still great and won several races for Enzo Ferrari, however acute asthma forced him to retire. His last race was his favourite Mille Miglia in 1948. He died on 11th August 1953.

Over 50 thousands people participated in his funeral in Mantova and his boss Enzo Ferrari said: Thank you for coming. A man like you won't be born again."
